Bring the dog

Pet-friendly family days out

Most theme parks and zoos are assistance-dogs only. The good news: some of the best family days out in Britain are open fields, living museums and gardens where a well-behaved dog on a lead is part of the furniture.

Where dogs are actually welcome

Richmond Park, Hyde Park, Beamish, Chatsworth parkland, Leeds Castle grounds, Trentham gardens, SS Great Britain’s weather deck, the National Railway Museum, RAF Cosford and Crealy in Devon all earn a yes — with the usual caveats around cafes, playgrounds and livestock.

Assume no, then check. Knowsley Safari offers kennels at the gate. Longleat has kennels because of the safari. Never leave a dog in a car, not even ‘for a minute’.
